Stay fit and happy by avoiding these common Christmas crackers

“God rest ye merry gentlemen”

  • Christmas is often a time spent sitting on soft, saggy sofas. This puts muscles, joints and ligaments under extra duress.
  • Get up from the sofa regularly, move around and follow any simple stretches you have been advised.
  • If you are suffering from a new, severe episode of back pain, avoid the sofa altogether and opt for an upright dining/kitchen chair.

“We all want some figgy pudding”

  • From “fancy crisps and nuts” to sickly sweet puddings and more alcohol than usual, the impact of “Christmas” foods on our bodies is a big challenge.
  • Sugar and most processed carbs promote inflammation and prevents the body from healing.
  • This can aggravate pre-existing injuries and make flare ups more likely.
  • Try to keep eating and drinking to moderate levels.

“Driving home for Christmas”

  • Driving up North to visit relatives ?  Avoid injury by making regular stops if your car journey is over an hour.
  • Consider whether you have your car seat set up correctly.

  • Sleeping on a sofa bed?   Try taking your own pillow with you to get the best chance of a good nights sleep.
